just a twinge of cosmic angst
Aug. 2nd, 2005 08:40 pmToday has been a day with extra added geekery, and you know that's a good thing. Work sucked, as is its wont, but I had an escape plan. To be precise, I was going to Iona to watch The Five Doctors and Pyramids Of Mars.
So, I got changed and moved so quickly out of work that I'm surprised I was spotted leaving. I proceeded to zoom up the drive, marvelling at how very sunny is was and how I might have trouble parking because people would be going to the beach. I wasn't expecting to be stuck in a traffic queue from where I could see Iona's house. It was surreal to say the least, and the park ranger sympathised with me. This is what comes of having a friend who lives in a white house by the sea. Nevertheless, I made it to Iona's after she wandered down and sat in the car with my while I, um, drove on the pavement for a little bit to get through her gates. An emergency, I swear.
We had sandwiches and discussed the differences in Indian and English cooking. She has spices with everything. I have mayonnaise with everything. On second thoughts, maybe I'm Belgian.
Anyway. We actually did get around to watching Classic Who, after the panic bought on by worrying if the tape would work, given that it was older than we were by about two years. Gosh. First up as The Five Doctors. It was bloody brilliant, actually. Firstly we both squeed at the inclusion of William Hartnell in his speech of "One day, I will be back!" or something like that, and the squee continued. It really did. We cheered at the inclusion of Four and Romana Mk II (rather too much in my case) and proceeded to wonder why, exactly, the Death Zone looked exactly like Yorkshire.
We both made happy noises at Angsty!Five and Silly!Four, as well as seriously getting down with The Master love. Oh, he's so evil and maniacal. I like Two more than I thought was possible, and Three I am witholding judgement on. There was also glee at the sight of Susan. We both love Susan to bits. It is decided.
So, that was brilliant.
Moving to more recent technology, we watched Pyramids of Mars, recently released on DVD but made 30 years ago. Once again, we are filled with Four love. Also, he and Sarah Jane? Really, really shippy. I don't feel the Romana/Four vibe at all, but I do feel Sarah Jane/Four. Seriously. He's all existential angst like in a bad fanfiction and she's all "Look! Look! I'm in a dress, y'all!"
Ahem.
The episode itself was actually rather good fun, even if it did go on for ages. I kept on thinking how RTD would ahve cut it down - there was a completely pointless side plot with a poacher, for a start. However, some moments were just so much fun that I forgave all. Especially when Sutekh's eyes began to glow. My inner Stargate girly made excited noises, as did my outside Stargate fan. Iona's dad walked in around this point, and stared at us.
"What are you watching?"
At which point, something like "If we reverse the polarity of the neutron flow, we just might do it!" was said by the Doctor. Iona's dad simply shook his head and walked out.
Heh. Nerd-dom is fun, you know?
Feeling thoroughly geeky, I drove home through relatively clear roads and pointedly ignored my petrol guage. I'm getting good at that.
I started to watch 'These Are The Voyages' tonight and gave up, muttering in disgust. It's an insult, simply, to all those who actually like Enterprise as a show on it's own merits. Which it deserves. Also, the two guest stars? Old and fat. All I'm saying.
So now I am considering going to bed because I feel rough again. I'm fed up of being so tired, and I'd better perk up by tomorrow night, which I'm really looking forward to, despite the fact I'll probably get lost trying to find Laura's house. Still, the rest of the evening should be good.
