hathycolSO COLD IT ISN'T FUNNY. Seriously, Fife Park, make up your fucking mind about heating hours. *shivers under a quilt* This morning, it was warmer outside - this was before sunrise - than it was in my bedroom. Camping for me tonight!
Today I have been an ACADEMIC NINJA. This is like being a ninja: sleek, armed with devastating semi-magical powers to defeat any enemy, except with KNOWLEDGE. This is because I have been getting a lot of lectures on the Reformation, and recently Martin Luther has been the topic of choice. Divinity has been driving at the point that Martin Luther is JUST LIKE the real church father and only reform attempts such as Jan Huss are nearly as good as Martin Luther. Except historiography lectures on the history of the Reformation quite baldly said 'That is a lie.'
So I sort of looked this up, and found out what the actual theology of the old church fathers was, and what Huss etc's theology was, and then I realised that is was VERY LITTLE LIKE LUTHER.
I brought this up after the lecture. I had a slightly shy argument with the lecturer, about how I honestly couldn't see the link, and wasn't it all a slightly fale construct?
He sort of argued a bit with that, but when I brought up specific examples.
"Yeah, but Luther was really authoritarian. Most of the reform before that had been a specific attempt to try and get the state out of meddling with the church, such as Julius II and his argument with the French. Luther said that anyone who killed a rebellious peasant was doing a virtuous thing!"
"Well, that is true, but we're focussing more on theology..."
"Where does sola fids come from? Or the idea of the elect? No one had said that before!"
"Er?"
It was a small and petty victory, but I'm getting interesting now, because I can compare all of this from various diffent aspects, and now we've stopped doing the 'POPE BAD BIBLE GOOD' hammering in section, I'm vaguely enjoying myself in learning the theology as long as no one attempts to persuade me it's true. I have a horrible feeling that although this semester is going to be death of my social life as I work my arse off with the frightening amount of reading I have to do for all three subjects, it also might be faintly valuable. I'm already mentally critiquing the history I know and where it comes from, and trying to actually think about historical method.
Anyway. That was my morning.
I have come home and spent lots of time shouting "I AM THE ACADEMIC NINJA!" and doing ninja poses. I should point out rather soon, I have to go out and go to lectures, and then a tutorial. And then it's DocSoc tonight, so I'm essentially not really getting a break today. The fact I think it is really funny to do ninja stances in the kitchen should attest to the amount of caffiene I've consumed today to make up for the fact that I'm really, really tired. This is because the heating hours appear to have been slashed, and as such the house didn't get a chance to heat up before I went to bed last night. I'm not feeling especially healthy, so I'm vaguely feverish as I sleep and the painkillers wear off, so I get too hot, and then start to freeze to death, so I don't sleep properly. Et voila; not enough sleep for someone doing a 7am-5pm day before the society meeting.
As such, I'm off to go and drink more tea and then do some tutorial reading whilst curled up under a quilt. Brrr. And oh! Today is Pancake Day. Derya is not here, so we're probably fucked, but we're going to make pancakes tonight. Just the three of us; Corinne is on the Fairtrade Fortnight scheme, where you live off only a pound a day. She is a heavy smoker and it twitchy already, so frying pancakes might cause her to come flying through the wall and kill us. It's nice when it's just the three of us, sometimes; we generally laugh too much and wail about work. As long as it's like this next year, life should be good.
Tomorrow? I give up chips for Lent. It's going to be a long 40 days.
