Apr. 7th, 2007 02:25 pmIf one ever wished to sum up my university experience in terms of People I Have Consistently Lived With (let's see if we make four years without killing each other, that'll be the challenge), this photo would probably do it.

Okay, you can only see the pink on Sarah but we were all in that lovely shade. This was taken weeks ago, at the elections. Ah. Happy times. That's Katie (
stupidore on the left, Sarah (
shuffle_off) in the middle and me, avec STRAIGHT HAIR EGADS on the right. It was a very cold, very windy day.
Er, right. Back to uni on Sunday, and for the first time, I'm actually a little bit sad about this, purely because I've actually had time to see people this Easter. It's strange, though We all sit in the pub and concentrate very hard on our accents and stuff, when in relation, we all live somewhere else now; Bristol, Nottingham, St Andrews, Huddersfield. This time we have left is fleeting; next year is third year for them all, and suddenly it'll just be me coming back in the holidays.
Life moves on, I suppose. All I seem to be doing at the moment is looking towards the future. I'm currently looking through honour courses with trepidation and fear; there's only one course that I'm willing to fight tooth and nail for, and that's the one on Samuel Pepy's world. Oh, Restoration Britain, how I adore thee. How I love the early modern period in general, to be honest. Other than that, I sort of have some vague ideas. We'll see what happens, I suppose. I can completely avoid any kind of 20th-century history, with a bit of luck.
Also, everything is now booked for Exciting Trip Across Italy. Three nights in Milan, Venice and Florence respectively, and six in Rome; to be finished off with a night sleeping rough in Pisa, because the airport shuts for the evening and opens half an hour before we need to check in for our early morning flight home. Dirt-cheap youth hostels - £7 a night in Rome - and for most we're even alone in a room for two. Not too bad! (Any suggestions for Things To Do Wot Are Cheap in those areas are welcomed; plans right now include 'Look At The Outside Of The Scala Opera And Hope They Have Poor Sound-Proofing' 'Marvel At The Exterior Of The Medici Mansion' 'Eat Ice Cream And Send Photo To Envious Mother' and 'Hope Being Catholic Gets You Into The Vatican On The Cheap'.)
I'm also getting increasingly excited about living in a Real House next year; dishwasher! TV! Carpets! A bath! My glee at the bath shows the sort of level to which my standard of living has decreased, I suppose.
Incidentally, I also got my navel re-pierced yesterday. About a year ago, it went significantly manky, and for the first time ever I actually gave up on the damned thing and took it out, as it was oozing, painful and had actually gone crooked and moved position. However, mostly out of boredom, I went and got it re-pierced in the new Quiggins. I like it there, actually; quite apart from the fact they give you a sticker ('I was brave at the piercers today!') they seem to know what they're doing, they're clean, they're quick and relatively cheap. It's a good job too, by the look of it. Hurts like a bitch right now, mostly because, due to the wandering of my previous piercing, it's neatly placed on some old scar tissue. I have also consumed a fairly large amount of alcohol every night for the past four days, so I also bled in a fairly scary way. All stopped now, and it's clean and central and as long as nothing touches it out I don't bend over, it's fine.
It leads me to thinking about the future again, though; how long can I keep on doing this? I haven't grown out of getting pierced, or of wearing slightly odd clothing, although I do now accept the need to 'fit in' as such, and I take most of my metal out for job interviews, etc, etc, and wear normal jeans and a nice plain t-shirt in 'normal' places. Okay, I wear that normally, except with bigger jeans and a lot more metal, but... eh. One day, I suppose, will I have to straighten up and fly right? I hope not. That's why a lot of what I have can be taken out or hidden for boring things and put back in at home or at the weekends. I'm running out of skin I can get away with this for, though; I still hope that my navel will settle so I can actually finally make a start on my long-wished for neval project of five barbells but other than that, I pretty much have no more options, as I know that facial piercings are not the best idea if one wants to move into what may or may not be the civil service, or maybe teaching.
The future is a foreign land, but hell, I've been planning travelling, right?
Good lord, that was a train of thought ramble if I ever wote one. Never mind. In the somewhat more near future, I will be in St Andrews on Sunday and back to work on Monday. Hurrah, etc, etc.

Date: 2007-04-07 03:07 pm (UTC)I wouldn't recommend the Vatican museums, at least not during the middle of the day - that might be better for an early morning trip as well. When we went it was like a bloody cattle run, hundreds of people crowding through the hallways - you barely got a chance to see anything before you got herded off again. It was such a waste because there is so much to see there, but all anybody's really interested in is getting to the Sistine chapel which, yes, is rather nice to look at, but completely ruined by the masses of people who simply won't shut the fuck up.
Oh, and there's a little pizza vendor next to the Pantheon who does the best pizza EVER. There's so much to see in Rome, you don't even need to look for it sometimes - it's all around you. Just out of interest, when are you going to be there? I might be heading back again in early September type-time with dad & Clare, because blatantly i haven't travelled enough this year :p Hope you have an amazing time in the other cities too, sounds so exciting!

Date: 2007-04-07 04:59 pm (UTC)I'm planning on getting my ears pierced multiple times. Well, not they aren't already but I want cartiledge which I haven't had done yet. I'm waiting for my tragus to heal because I want to pierce the other ear & I need to be able to sleep.
I haven't tried the new place in Quiggins. Partly because I miss the one that was in the old quiggins & I don't know where he moved to. I have however found a very good place in Camden that comes highly recommended (shocking I know), they did my tragus & I was very pleased with them.

Date: 2007-04-07 05:01 pm (UTC)The old Roman ruins are pretty nifty, but they are pretty much rubble on the ground except for a few buildings. But, would likely please the historian in you.

Date: 2007-04-09 09:22 am (UTC)Oh, and I'll be there from 28th Agusut-13th Septemeber - it would prove my theory about The World Being Too Small if you were in Italy at the same time!

Date: 2007-04-09 09:23 am (UTC)The new place in the new Quiggins is pretty good, actually; a bit cheaper and more piercers, stuff like that. It's not as pretty to get to, like the way the old one was decorated, which is a shame.
