May. 12th, 2007 04:32 pmIt's been a busy few days, in which I promptly feel like rubbish, revise far too much (DAMN YOU EXAM BOARD) and also sleep too much. I came home from work yesterday, did some reading, lay down for just a second and then woke up an hour and a half later before resolving that I may as well sleep for another hour and curled up under the quilt, this time without glasses on.
Thank god I have next week off work. It's quite exciting, not getting up at 6.30am to clean the Union.
Anyway, more exciting things! I have, instead of doing any real work (I'm sailing through lecture notes, but I have a nagging tendency to sleep through lectures which means I am probably not learning useful things) gone out to the cinema quite a lot.
On Thursday, me and
stupidore decided to ignore the critics and go and see Spiderman 3. I would try to give a half-decent review, but I can't. I haven't enjoyed a film that much for ages. Katie and I were in the kids section, and instead of, you know, considering the merits of the special effects, or the fact that they actually did a really good job with Venom, we laughed loudly and often with a mild bout of hysteria in it. Families looked confused as we howled with derision at the emo-flick, the eyeliner, the dancing and the god-awful crotch thrust. I predict it will be a new dance craze.
Also it had Bruce Campbell.
However, yesterday was the real excitement. All by myself, surrounding my a slightly bizarre contingent of German yahs as well as possibly all the goth kids of the local comprehensive school (most blatently under 18) and being one of three girls in the cinema, I went to see
I'm still a bit undecided on it. I really, really enjoyed it, which is what counts, although it's not as good as the first one. It had some genuinely frightening and mildly horrific bits - the total darkness on the Underground was one moment that really stood out to show the dystopia. I'm not familiar with London, not really, only the touristy bits. 28 Days Later showed all the bits that are familiar; this one didn't. I haven't got a bloody clue where the Isle of Dogs is. I don't even know if it's a real island. So, er, that didn't have as much of an impact.
Some little things were very clever, though; the mentions of the refugee camps in Spain was one, the opening scene with everyone barricaded into a cottage in the country. That was effective.
Didn't see a lot of twists coming. Well, I didn't think Robert Carlyle was going to play one of the infected in it, which he did with some aplomb. The infected, actually, were the usual nasty and impressive selves; the scene in the darkness with the crowd was truly horrible, as well as the scene in the car.
The Americans were... well, American. OH LOOK A METAPHOR FOR IRAQ. The fire bombing and the chemical warfare didn't seem out of the place, though; if I'm honest, it's what I would have done.
The ended, well, I'm not entirely sure I liked that. The first film ended with a hopeful note, you know? The idea that some kind of survivors were out there, etc. (I assume Jim, Selena and Hannah were either firebombed to death or decided not to go to London.) This ending was miserable; Britain was, at least, an island and therefore safe; having spread to Europe, it sort of takes away the point. Or does it? In the same way I don't find zombies in Pittsburgh frightening, I don't find French zombies frightening.
Still, worth seeing!
I want to see the first one again now.
I should probably get back to work now. I want to get some more done before I debate Eurovision. I really, really, really want to watch it, but in the middle of revision, I won't be able to corral anyone to watch it with me. Alas.
