hathycolI just got this e-mail from my tutor:
For next week's class I won't ask anyone to give a presentation. But I would like all of you to be well briefed in relation to the 2 questions given on the hand-out for week 10, i.e. 'In what ways did English political culture change between the end of Pepys’s first diary in 1669 and his fall from office in 1688/9?' and 'How was Pepys’s life and career affected by national events between 1670 and 1688/9?' This should allow for a real discussion, rather than me watching you go glassy-eyed as I give a pointless potted lecture. Secondly, I would like each of you to write a practice gobbet, chosen from amongst those available on the past papers reproduced on the main handout. These should be circulated by e-mail to the other members of the group (including me) by noon next Monday so that we can discuss them on Tuesday. Preparing and writing these should not take you more than one hour (2 will be written in 45-50 mins in the exam). Should you wish to write more than one practice gobbet, please feel free.
I e-mailed him back. You will be astonished to discover that my response was not 'sod off, twatface, it's Christmas' (my language is appalling at the moment) and was just me e-mailing him my essay quite politely. GUESS WHAT I WAS THINKING THOUGH.
So, between now and Monday night I have to write an entire 3,000 word essay on historical accuracy, read up on that class, write a gobbet for that class, and watch a silent German film called Die Nibelungen: Siegfried and ideally I need to have sort of read Nibelungenlied but even the (admittingly the nice one) tutor figured that wasn't going to happen.
I can do none of this on Monday because Simon is coming to visit me that day which is CLEARLY WONDERFUL and given the rest of the world has stopped for Christmas I feel I should be allowed to as well. This means that I have three and a half days to do all this, so logically I should, you know, start.
Right now, though, I would sort of like to curl up in a small ball and go to sleep since I, you know, spent all day yesterday essay writing and watching The Muppet Christmas Carol (it's great to see a cinema full of student cheering because Tiny Tim is not in fact dead).
