Feb. 24th, 2009 03:22 pmLast night I watched the final of University Challenge. I had been promised by a bit of internet furore that Gail Trimble, captain of Corupus Christi College, Oxford, was either a foxy bit of intelligent crumpet or an irritating know-it-all. To be honest, I was plumping for Manchester the whole way through on the basis that they weren't the favourites, and my support is a bit like my football support; go for the North over all others, unless you have personal connections to like/dislike a team. (For example; I will always support Bolton over say, Arsenal.)
Anyway. I didn't think much either way of her, to be honest; her cringing at knowing the answers seemed to me the embarrassment of being 'too clever' that only the British can exude in buckets. She exuded what a lot of the teams from Certain Universities And Colleges - mine included - tended to; mild academic snobbery and a clear privileged background. So did the Manchester team. Anyone who gets that fair in a competition is a very clever person whatever happens; and I can do the fact recall thing with elephantine like abilities at times.
To be honest, the main thing that stood out for me about the whole thing was that the voiceover man was probably about to pass out, he had to talk so fast. Maybe it's because Trimble and I are only a year apart in age, with... well, a vaguely similar higher education. I just wasn't massively impressed by her. And she wasn't even slightly attractive, so I feel a bit cheated, too.
Ah well. I never even managed to get around to auditioning for University Challenge and now probably never will.
Now - to class. I am ridiculously busy today. I should have spent this hour reading the Orderic Vitalis, not musing about Gail flipping Trimble.
