Dec. 4th, 2003 08:38 pmIt's a rare thing that I read our local paper. Today, I did so for no real reason other than that I would have thrown a brick at the telly if I'd have watched Eastenders, and I ws too comfy to leave the sofa.
I am a politics student. I'm ashamed to say that I learnt this absolutely Earth-shattering horrific news from the Ormksirk Advertiser.
Apparently, we're not going to be a part of West Lancashire anymore. Since it won't exist.
WHY? I hear you all cry. Well, in this wonderful nation on ours, we have a council for the county and a council for the distict. I am in West Lancashire council district. I even worked there, sticking stuff into envelopes for work experience.
It's all a little dull, but it's our little district and I feel strangely patriotic over it.
No more. With this system, Whitehall are a bit pissed off, and decided just to have County Councils, and as such are drawing up new maps and adding districts to different places. However, my district is being sliced up and added to different places.
So, West Lancs will be no more. I will live in Sefton. There are people on my Friends Page who live in Sefton, and I mean this in the dearest and kindest way, but I desperately don't want to be in Sefton. At all. Never. Ever. To be frank, Ormskirk was the second biggest town in West Lancashire and it ws nice having something approaching importance. I don't want to be part of Sefton.
Even worse, Skem gets taken over by Wigan. My condolences to both.
I am Not Happy.
Other thing I spotted in the paper:
shipperkitten! I had given the paper to Mum by this point, and she looked through it and went "Awww. Guide Dogs. We should adopt one."
I respond along the lines of "Oh, Em does that, she has a dog called Nessie..."
"This dog Nessie? LFC one?"
So, Nessie is also in the Ormskirk Advertiser. This amused me.
Out to Manchester tomorrow, Christmas shopping. Fingers crossed I can finish it all by Sunday, and get it wrapped and cards written etc. I will put out the request for addresses soon, as soon as I make a list/sit down to write them.
Also going to go and see Love, Actually which everyone keeps on telling me is good. I need to feel warm, generous and Christmassy. Will it work?
Bah, humbug I say.

[Edit: I'm an idiot. I meant the district of West Lancs, and not the constituency. Thanks to
loneraven for pointing it out.]

Date: 2003-12-04 09:23 pm (UTC)Out of interest, which party is Colin Pickthall? What happens to him? Does he lost his seat?
Crosby has Claire Curtis-Thomas, who is all right - she's Labour - and Southport has a Lib Dem MP, I believe. All very interesting.
And for an added piece of utter triviality - when I lived on the Wirral, I lived in the constituency of Wirral South (the same one Em and Clare live in now, I believe). And our MP died. There was a by-election. I was much too young to know what was going on. But... the BBC came to Heswall. And I was on TV! I was in the background when Michael Burke was reporting.
Ahem. Finished now.

Date: 2003-12-04 09:36 pm (UTC)Buggar, wrong term used.
We'll still have West Lancs constituency. We'll lose the council. Colin Pickthall won't lose his job, but he is 'outraged and furious'. They're getting rid of the two-tier form of local council, and Ormskirk will be bunged into Sefton.
Shame on me. Wrong term used. Replace 'constituency' with 'district'.
Pickthall is Labour, incidentally. Nice bloke, knows my Dad from the Ye Olde Days (better known as the 80's) when they were the Socialist/Old Labour Ormskirk Cadre or something similiar.
And dude. Michael Burke. I'm impressed!

Err... that probably made no sense.
