Anyone who thinks my life is interesting will be sadly disappointed by this update. I watched The Ninth Gate last night, which looked promising – books! Classical music! Satan! – and turned out to be the most frustrating film on the earth. Sometimes, I want a film that explains the ending nicely. I like films like that, at the times (i.e. the summer) my braincells are sadly depleted and moving into the minus numbers. Anyway. The film was frustrating. It did have a pretty soundtrack, though.

Today has been Eeek, They’re Coming Back day. Well, El Familio aren’t back for a while, but tomorrow I will be out of the house by 9.40 and I won’t be back until quite late – going to go and see Arthur and I must say I’m looking forward to it, despite the fact that I will be smelly with brambles in my hair. Once more I’m spending all day at Scarisbrick hacking at brambles. Hurrah!

So, today I’m cleaning. I’ve taken yet another crate to the recycling point and earned myself yet another lot of weird looks. I’ve done all the washing, ironing and sorting whilst watching Shrek. However, I still have random stuff that needs to be done:

1. Bathrooms. *shudder*
2. Hoovering. Everywhere.
3. Sofa cushions. They’re dry now!

I don’t doubt there’s more hiding somewhere.

At [livejournal.com profile] lilka’s suggestion, I’m Really Getting Into American politics. I suppose I should listen more to the stuff on the upcoming elections, though, and P Diddy has just come onto Radio 1 to tell me why I should go out and vote. Erm, he does know that Radio 1 isn’t generally broadcast in America? Anyway, the Democrats are being nice and noisy in supporting Kerry, and now I’m coming out of my self-inflicted political white noise, even I have picked up on the Kerry/Edwards OMGTHEIRLOVEISSOPOLITICAL. Lots of people seem to be openly supporting Kerry, and I am doing a little dance of joy about this. On the other hand, a voice in my head is hissing “Sheffield Rally 1992! Sheffield Rally 1992! BEWARE!” I mean, sure Anyone But Bush 2004, but… it might not happen. And he might not be any better. Tony Blair, the hijacker of Basic Principles! It amuses me that the Tories don’t actually, technically, have principles, being basically changeable and a word I can’t remember, but they’re having trouble working themselves out, whereas Labour have set down clauses but people don’t mind stomping all over them. A shame.

I think I need to start reading the Independent again, I just realised I miss being political. I haven’t touched a quality newspaper since I left college and it might do me some good to get the brain cells working again. Or being born again, I dread to think how many of them I’ve killed in the last week.

Maybe.

In a final note, it has been decided that [livejournal.com profile] elentari_valie is my soul
mate. Thank you.

Right-o. Time to go and cut some vegetables to make tea. Fabulous meal of pasta combined with thinly sliced non-spicy sauce and vegetables. Discovered last night I seem to have lost three pounds – something of a surprise, and it’s nice to be (barely) under the 10 stone mark again.

Re: The Ninth Gate. Still haven't seen it, but the book it's based on is amazing. The Club Dumas, by someone whose name I can't remember. I've avoided seeing the movie because I heard they bastardized the hell out of it. But doesn't it also have Johnny Depp? So it's a hard one to keep avoiding. Maybe I'll just reread the book and imagine the main character as Johnny Depp.

*grins* Even Johnny Depp is both boring and bland in this film. It's a beautiful film - my inner film geek is in love with the setting, the timing, the just gorgeousness of the set dressing and mis en scene - but it's all empty promise.

The book, however, sounds like a fabulous idea. *puts onto summer reading list*

I don't remember a lot about the premise of the movie, but I remember thinking "Oh, so they took all the interesting stuff out of the book and made a movie out of what was left."

If you liked the atmosphere and the promise, I definitely recommend you read the book. :-)

Thank you so much for that link!

*cheers on the arrival of payday* I really shouldn't have splurged ?45 for a bar through my tongue, but such is life. I am so investing in that when I get paid.

I saw Ninth Gate too. Found it really disappointing; techincally very competant but no emotional interest. Twas a shame.

Pleased to have an influence on your political viewing, m'dear. And yes, I'm having worried thoughts about the Sheffield Rally as well. I just have to keep reminding myself that most of what is happening at the convention is fairly normal for American politics.

Ninth Gate was so... pretty. Lovely setpieces; crap film. Such is life.

As of yet, I know next to nothing about American politics... ah, the joys of a Proper A Level. Still, if it's normal then I'm going to try and clam down and not feel worried for poor Kerry.
