Mar. 21st, 2005 09:14 pmScared very much by the fact that the local trashy radio station (I listen to it in the evening because Zane Lowe - on Radio 1 - leaves me twitching with the strangest urge to hurl rocks at the radio whilst screaming "SHUT THE FUCK UP AND PLAY THE FUCKING SONG!" Gosh, my language is appalling) has, so far, played Razorlight, which is fairly trendy-indie, Greenday, which is fairly mainstream, but now THE FUTUREHEADS who are definitely fringe-indie. By god, is Rock FM living up to its name?
Perhaps not, as now it's Eurotrash dance music again. Thank god, I was scared for a minute there.
Jesus, I'm bored. I ended up cooking and cleaning out of aforementioned boredom today, and you know that's not good. Tomorrow involves shopping for Jess's birthday present - they just don't STOP - and if you're all really lucky, a long and involved review of a fic that I'm currently reading and still unsure about. One on hand, I suspect it's one of the best fics I've ever read when discussing the human mentality, the general feeling at Hogwarts and the shadowy nature of power. On a completely different hand, I'm not sure if it's all just a slightly bad angsty trip with fair too much urple language. I found this fic on
pottersues and she seems to feel the same way. It's here if you're curious about giving it a whirl. I'd like to see some of your intelligent feelings on this, since quite a lot of you are much better writers than I am. What's it about? Read it and see.
Blah blah blah. I can feel a fandom kick coming on, actually. Spent a lot of today chatting to
loneraven about Battlestar Galactica, about how wonderful it was, about how for a change I was suffering a frankly odd Librarian Folly, and that oh, they were going to kill us come C7. I'm not going to explain any of this for fear of self-incrimination.
Also, I'm going to re-read the entire Harry Potter series again since this fic - Summon The Lambs To The Slaughter - is quietly taking over my life. And oh yes. Doctor Who. The BBC are bloody cunning, that's for sure. Once you hear the music this weird internal British Sci Fi Switch jumps on. It's the same switch that leads to quivering lumps of glee at the new Hitchhiker's trailer, the one that makes you eternally optimistic about a new Red Dwarf series and/or film. Lots of sci-fi and cult stuff comes from Britain, you see. Tolkien, par example. Harry Potter. HG Wells. And on. And on. But a lot of those become Americanised and international and take away all the little things that made them British, you know? And that's not a bad thing, but the little bits of patriotism in me come out now and again. Right now, that's Doctor Who. By cunningly putting on adverts BETWEEN EVERY SHOW and on Radio 1 ("Do you want to come with me?" ohmygosh they have a Dalek and it has CHAINS and I can't help but wonder if they'll show the Doctor regenerating and squeesqueesquee) I can feel the fangirly bubble growing, and I'm not sure if should be or not. I did watch Doctor Who when I was very little, in the form of repeats. In early days of fandom, I watched them on a Sunday morning before the Farscape repeat. But... well, it's not quite my fandom. Yeah, I know who played all of the Doctors, and I know about some of the aliens past the Daleks. (There's... um.. Cybermen! And that's all I can remember, and I only rememebr them because Dad is afraid of Cybermen. No, really. They terrified him when he was little, apparently.) I know what the TARDIS is, but I don't know what it stands for. And I know what episode John Cleese cameo-d in because it was yesterday morning. ("City Of Death" for those that care.) That's about it.
And I still get the little buzz of happiness and excitement when I see an advert! You know the buzz. It's like seeing the first trailer for ROTK for the first time, or a new series of Stargate, or something. That little buzz of the truly, utterly and unashamed geek. Hmmm. We'll see what this Saturday brings.
On a complete side note, my calender (a freebie from SFX) is the rather hilarious Killer Calender From Outer Space. The poster for this month? "Doctor Who And The Daleks!" Good lord.

Date: 2005-03-21 10:23 pm (UTC)And I'm still reading it, and it's confusing. It's really, really, good and it's really involving. From one hand, I can see why the characters act the way they do - look at it from Rebecca's perspective and it all makes sense, but at the same time, it makes me uncomfortable. I can't claim to even like Rebecca, although I'm warming up to her.
It's all very strange.
