May. 5th, 2005 12:00 pmEveryone, today is polling day for the 2005 General Election in Britain. I am not going to try and persuade people to follow my green, socialist views, because it's too late now.
But you know I DO want to say?
VOTE.
Go on. Go and VOTE.
Are you a man with working class roots? Or even middle class? People struggled and died for your right to vote. The Chartist movement, preceeded by the Levellers; nice people. Quite a lot of them killed by the police and army, just for asking for suffrage.
SO VOTE.
Are you a woman full stop? The same applies to you. I am not a radical feminist, I just think that if women died for us to have the right to vote then it's sickening not to use it.
SO VOTE.
As such, I beg of you to vote. Preferably Green or Labour, but in all seriousness, go and vote, even if you spoil the paper and write "never mind the bollocks" on it. All it takes is a cross and they even have pretty pictures to show you which party you're voting for.
SO VOTE.
...
GO ON THEN!

Date: 2005-05-05 11:34 am (UTC)Just winding you up.
I agree with you on the voting thing. Any woman who doesn't vote doesn't deserve to be able to.

Date: 2005-05-05 05:46 pm (UTC)don't actually have anything new to add, but I feel like there are more people bothered about taking part in this election, more people trying to point out how important it is to vote (on tv, radio, the internet, posters about, we had a leaflet through the door just asking us to vote from a neighbourhood watch type commitee) I guess we'll see if its true when they announce the turnout.
the count/result is on tv most of the night isn't it?

Date: 2005-05-05 06:23 pm (UTC)Being middle-class is not a bad thing! I was merely pointing out that even the middle classes wouldn't be able to vote without the Chartist movement. So :P And I know you're winding me up.
And I so agree with you on the second point.
