Apr. 27th, 2012 07:25 pmOKAY GUYS LET'S TALK ABOUT THE AVENGERS HERE! Non-spoilery things first.
1. I am not calling in Avengers Assemble because - well, maybe this is a spoiler, I don't know - but at no point is any Ikea furniture involved. I am British and we have an Avengers boxset in our house but I AM CAPABLE OF TELLING THETWO APART. Thank'ee kindly.
2. 3-D! It looks really pretty! But it turns out I can't really see it properly in my left eye! Which was, you know, a bit rubbish. Once the film ended I suddenly realised that little pain in my head was getting worse very quickly and I woke up this morning wishing for death and threw up in the toilets at work. (I went to work on the basis that as there are NOISY toddlers above me and builders below me it might actually be a little more restful.) I am one of those people who get adverse effects from 3-D. Jolly good. That said, it did look magnificent out of my right eye so if you are one of those people who doesn't vomit via the 3-D migraine then hey, splurge on this one.
3. I HAD FORGOTTEN HOW MUCH FUN IT IS TO GO TO AN OPENING NIGHT OF A GEEKY FILM. I spent all the time before the film people watching and also nosying in on conversations around me. Glorious.
Oh, I was so excited about this film and I really, really wasn't disappointed. There are things I wanted and didn't get - i.e. Darcy, a little more of Captain America getting used to the twenty-first century, Robert Downey Junior taking his top off.
That said, there was a lot of stuff that I didn't expect to love and I really did. The Hulk was by far and away the character with the biggest fanlove in the cinema I was in, and Mark Ruffalo was brilliant. I was also pleasantly surprised at how much stuff they managed to actually fit in and make every character really rounded. Black Widow was ace, too.
I can't believe that they killed Phil! I can see why they did, and I should have been suspicious from the moment that he started getting all of the best lines, but oh.
In terms of villainy, Loki remained of course marvellous, and still suitably conflicted in his conversation with Thor. The rest of the bad guys were suitable for what they needed to be, all things considered.
OH THOR LET ME COUNT MY LOVE. I would rather like to know how he feels about going to Earth, or how he got there, or indeed how he felt about not seeing Jane, but I'm hoping that's what we have Thor 2 for! But also there was the evolution from the first film with learning about Loki, and just oh.
And Samuel L. Jackson was awesome. This goes without saying.
I need to go and see it again. In 2-D, mind you.
