hathycol: (history time)

I have precisely one week and one day left in which I must work. This is a Nice Feeling, because this morning I felt like death. I'm having some trouble with my stomach at the moment that I don't think I can keep on putting down to my sudden intake of Real Food. The mornings, about an hour after I eat for the first time, are terrible. I'm not quite how to go about Making This Go Away, because I still have a full and strong appetite most of the time. I think it might have something to do with what I'm eating, but honestly, it's really not that different to what I normally eat. If it keeps on until the end of the summer, I might go and see the doctor, because I'm fed up of my stomach rebelling against me. Bad stomach! WE GET ON SO WELL NORMALLY. I have a suspicion, actually, that it might just be my body adjusting to being fed at completely randomised times. Food-wise, I am a creature of habit, and eating at seven (forcing myself to, might I add; eating in the morning has never been a habit, but hey, I don't get a break until eleven!) is so many levels of killing me.

(It's not morning sickness. I am religious with my Pill, except for when I'm not, in which I get religious about using other sorts of contraception. Also I have some exciting and compelling biological evidence to point out that I really can't be.)

Also, I am so tired it's not funny. The weather is perfect for sleeping, at the moment, and even now I'm debating crawling into my nice comfy bed. I would have gone for a nap at a sensible time, but dude, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was on.

I mean, dude.

However! I am going to London on Friday! Yay! This is exciting, because I like London, and I like travelling, and I will see Andrew in his native habitat and also I will see Simon YAY. However, due to Andrew's work buggaring up a wee bit, I have all of Saturday to myself. This means I can go and be touristy all by myself, which I'm a bit excited about. That sounds really sad, I realise. But if you're touristy by yourslf, you have proper freedom, and can see what you want. I tend to have a very odd taste, and I hate going to museums and having to stick in a group. I'd much rather walk around under my own speed, doing my scary quick reading as well as stopping to linger over what I want to. As such, being touristy by myself could be quite fun.

The problem is, I'm not quite sure what to do. The provisional plan of action is to have a bit of a sleep-in, avoid Andrew's housemates who will probably be naturally afraid of me, and then go out of the house, armed with nothing but my newly-purchased large bag and the clothes I'm wearing that night for the Prom. I quite want to go to Camden Market, but I also know that I can't really traipse into the Albert Hall with three shopping bags plus the huge great shoulder bag I'm already using. (I wonder if I could wear the top and the shoes all day, and change into the skirt later on? Or maybe the other way around?) I also quite fancy going to a museum (STOP WITH THE LAUGHING) and I've never been to the British Museum. Unless I have, and I've forgotten. Either way, though, I'm no good in a museum unless it's just me.

The thing is, the British Museum is free and I know I'll have a whale of a time and probably spend the best part of the day in there. Camden Market is also free, and I know I'll have a whale of a time and spend the best part of the day in there. I have to be at the Albert Hall for 7.00, and I have to eat previously, so... hmmm. I wonder if I can do both? I ould spend the morning at Camden, eat, and then go to the museum for a wee while... might stop me from shopping too much. Either way, though, eehee. It's all quite easy by Tube, too, although it might end up being pricey.

To anyone who's been to either or preferably both - can I feasibly do both in a day? And ahahahaha there is a display on the Enlightenment. Ahahaha. *flails excitedly*

I am a history geek with an unfortunate tendancy towards wanting to be trendy-alternative. Woe.

... I am still, however, qoefully exhausted. I will instead go and put my stuff in the tumble dryer (yay for touristy clothes!) and try not to think too longingly of my bed. There's also a show on tonight I quite fancy watching - A Town Called Eureka. It may curb my wanting to rewatch Dead Like Me.

Yay for tourism!

British Museum! It's definitely worth going and the wonderful thing is that you could spend a whole day there and still not see it all. This means you have an excuse to go back repeatedly and y'know, it's free!

The free bit is the one that's getting me. Also, exhibits on Byzantium AND THE FRENCH ENLIGHTENMENT.

Camden won't be open much until late morning/afternoon & I doubt that if you went to camden & then the museum you wouldn't get much time at both.

I would advise not going to camden because I can see you wanting to spend lots of money & that is bad. Therefore I would definitely suggest going to the British Museum. The great hall is amazing & astounding & I adore it as a Classics student.
It's extremely easy to spend a day in there though food is ridiculously expensive.

Also, there is a bag check type place by the back entrance so you could dump said big bag there whilst you wander around all day. Take a packed lunch though maybe.

& tbh if you know which buses to get (I don't know where Andrew is) it would be much cheaper getting buses & imo much more interesting as sitting on the tube is ridiculously hot & gives you no nice views whereas I love getting the bus & sitting right at the front on the top deck as you can just watch the surroundings which is fun. I'd advise the bus to the Museum (though from what I remember the stop isn't next to the museum so you really have to have an idea of when you're in the right area to get off) & then maybe get the tube after so you aren't late to see Simon.

You are usefulness of wonderfulness! I don't fancy the bus because I think the Tube is a bit exciting and also Andrew lives in, uh, Lewisham. Which is quite far by bus, and given I'm getting the bus there and back...

True true & I suppose given the time you'll be there for the tube is probably better. But if you have a big bag watch out for pickpockets & the like. If the tube is busy it can be quite easy to get robbed etc.
Also, don't wear anything too warm that you won't easily be able to take off because the tube will be hot.

Go to the British Museum! There's loads to see there...you will not be able to get round it all in a day! You might find it useful to have a plan of action before visiting, so you know in advance what areas you're going to focus on.

And as someone else said, take the bus rather than the tube - if you go to the TFL homepage (http://www.tfl.gov.uk) you should find one which stops nearish. Much nicer to be looking out of a bus window than with someone's sweaty armpit in your face on the tube and I think it costs less than half what the tube costs too.

Argh, no! The bus is TERRIBLE and they scare me. But I will go to the British museum! (Becuase I have many classicists and historians on my flist who I think will eat me otherwise.)

British Museum! Definately go there. I'm kind of sorry that I'm going to Leicester on Saturday and can't be your tour guide.

That said, in my opinion you can definately do both Camden and the British Museum. While you can spend all day at the BM, you don't go on taking it in after a certain point; and you don't want too long at Camden because you'll just spend money.

To save money on the Tube, don't go until after 9:30am (end of rush hour), and buy a Cheap Day Travelcard. You can hop on and off as many times as you like after that.

'Tis shame indeed, though I'd be scared to spoil your 'tourist alone' time.

You're welcome. It's a hard-learned lesson on my part, and a thing I frequently apply when going into London for tourist reasons.

I did both Camdem and the British Museum when I was in London last week, although not in the same day as both are rather tiring. Camden is obviously the more shiny option, but it makes you want to spend every last penny you own (and even some you don't) and going on a weekend is VERY busy.

The Museum is great though, we learnt so much about Greeks and Romans, making the Classicist in me very happy. However, after a point all the info just sort of floats off you and you can't learn any more, and feet get sore quite quickly. There is a cloakroom for bags (we put suitcases there) but they charge 2 squid.

Not helpful really, I just wanted to share!

See, that's why I think I might just go to Camden for a teeny-tiny bit, just so I can say that I went. And so that I can still take in as much as possible at the BM!
