Is university administration terrible everywhere, then, or is it just St Andrews?

Seriously, people. I went to matriculate, and I did so, with very little hassle, and I got advised into subjects, but I haven't got a bloody clue where the hell I sign up. I know what classes I'm doing, and at what time they occur, but I quite seriously have no idea where the initial lectures are for them.

This is not good, people.

Anyone out there who has braved the terrors of St A's administration who can tell me HOW THE HELL I ACTUALLY TURN UP FOR CLASSES?

Also we drank 6 and a half bottles of wine last night between about seven people until about 2am and I went to work at 7am. RESPECT AND POSSIBLY FEAR ME.

Is this any help? www.st-and.ac.uk/academic/history/timetables

If not, tell me your history classes and I'll check it for you.

University admin tends to the crap.
Way Back When I was at uni, the timetables were posted on the first day of term. My subjects tended to start at 9:00 on the Monday morning. The admin office that released them was in the middle of campus, which is theoretically useful, but not when said campus is the second largest in the country (over 400 acres, IIRC)!

Also, I respect and have fear for your liver.

I have had to trek all the way to the modern languages secretariat, who didn't know what subject it was and had to find help before I found out one of the times.

BET THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO BASTARDING PRINCE WILLIAM.

Some universities have a tendency to be quite rubbish with the admin stuff, but St. Andrews is notably worse than most.

Ask on thesinner, and if they're no use, maybe pop along to the schools in question and ask the secretaries?

Modern language secretariet HADN'T HEARD OF IT. (I am taking Modern Literature In Translation For Idiots, which should be fun.)

That's um, very, very crappy. Did you find out the times alright, though? (is it the 19th century lit in translation class, btw?) How come you're not taking Russian Lit?

Anyways. What else are you taking?

I did find out the times eventually, but I am slightly suspicious it's either got a class size of six or that she gave me the wrong place - Room 305 in the Buchanen doesn't sound very big.

I'd take Russian, but it clashes with Medeival, which I really want to do this year, because I am deeply sad. I'm also taking Modern History which I don't want to do, but I want to do the honours stuff in it and also I think I might enjoy some bits of it.

Maybe.

Maybe it is just a very small class? It's really one of the more obscure modules, so chances are, hardly anyone is taking it.

Mmm. I have to say, second year Modern History is fantastic. I loved the civil rights bit and the environmental history bit was fun too (that may be because we spent my tutorial talking about The Simpsons and it was actually relevant to the discussion at hand). You're weird, so you will probably like Mediaeval. It wasn't my thing, since it was all England/Wales for most of it. The Vikings were fun and so was the Scottish bit (Scottish history FTW!) and I was allowed to be bitchy about people's erroneous assumptions about Highlanders. The best part about that module is that there are no bloody Carolingians, hurrah!

Anyway, yes. Wish I was there with you lot for freshers week! I shall try and pop down at some point soon for a vist. Lick Katie for me, will you? :)

Just wanted to say howdy-doody, and did you get my text the other day? I found out i can text from here using my Canadian phone to UK phones for about 10p, so i thought i may as well try it out! Seems to be a bit temperamental though, i was just curious :)

I did get it, but my phone won't text back, and heaven knows I tried! I was just about to e-mail you actually. :-) It was wonderful to hear from you, but I take noblame for the greatness of William Shatner!

Yes it is terrible everywhere. I've been told to turn up in Oxford next Saturday, but no one has said where!

The uni admin here is terrible too. You would think that as we all went to the effort of filling in the online registration form, which seems to crash if it gets more than 3 people on at once, and which they said would make registration QUICK AND EASY they would take that as meaning yes we do want to come back to uni this year and we do want to do the modules we put down on the form, but no, we still get to spend the best part of a day queueing (sp?!) up so they can confirm it all! And then there are the free electives and passport language modules and such which all require running round like a headless chicken trying to find the actual right person who actually knows about these things and can actually sign you up for it. And then there's the fact that unlike the other departments, modern languages don't see fit to send us a provisional timetable in the post, but make us run around the department with bits of paper copying it down off notice boards, and by the looks of the times on the bit of paper they did send, we have to do this at the same time as the freshers, oh joy!
