(no subject)

So, being a studious type of gal, I'm sat here, waiting for my washing to finish drying, and I was suddenly become ever so confused. You see, I'm doing a presentation for medieval on Tuesday, and the guide to it says 'Compare the Viking invasion of 1031 and the Norman one in 1066'

Now, this would be a reasonable request were it not for the small issue that, you know, there wasn't a Viking invasion in 1031. 1013, sure, but...

On the bright side, I have at least finished all my reading for next week's tutorials and all my Viking reading. If I can get European Lit sorted over the weekend then I may actually pass my degree. Writing essays? Piss-easy. Honestly, I like doing it. I find it quite satisfying to get all my ideas down on paper, and even if it's a frustrating topic, writing it isn't so hard. I like writing. Oh no, it's the research that's the buggar. I never know how long it's going to take, or if what I need will be available at the time I need it for and ARGH IT IS STRESSFUL. I do have the world's greatest skim reading brain, though (I did three books yesterday. Me 1, King Cnut 0!) which means at least it gets done.

All in all, I'm feeling less vicious against history because WE'RE ONTO THE NORMANS AND 1066 AND THANK FUCK FOR THAT. Seriously, soon we get exciting stuff like Thomas Beckett! and John I! and stuff like that! and the formation of the modern Middle East! And I'm remembering that I don't exactly hate my degree and that when I get into it I rather love it. This is a positive thing, I think. As long as I can keep being so happy about it through learning about the Italian nation-state formation then I'll be okay.

I could really do with another few hours sleep, though. *yawns*

I think that sounds like an easy presentation: one existed, the other didn't! Unfortunately your tutor probably won't see it that way :(

But you get to do vikings? I'm jealous! Although I am rather loving translation at the moment, so I've not really got much reason to complain.

I would say play innocent and claim one didn't exist but then you would probably get waaay more brownie points for observing the mistake and having the initiative to look up the right one! That is as detailed as the maternal advice gets for my historical preferences do not exceed beyond about 100AD and even that is pushing it!

Alas, my problem comes in that I am actually doing my essay on the assorted Viking invasions and she knows that because I went and flailed at her.

I shot myself in the foot a bit, there.

(100AD? There were... Romans then? Maybe? I know NOTHING of history pre-700AD other than what films tell me.)

I like the Normans. They are interesting and tricksy and leave stuff like EVIDENCE whereas Vikings are all "RAH! WE MAKE INTERESTING STORIES BUT WE LEAVE NO USEFUL EVIDENCE SO NO ONE REALLY KNOWS MUCH ENJOY THAT ESSAY YOU HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT US!"

I think it is maybe time to take a break from the Vikings.

Have they fixed the very obvious typo of King Cnut in this year's ME2001 source book? I hope they haven't, because reading about King Cunt made tutorials so much more amusing...
