Nov. 8th, 2006 04:07 pmAh, American elections. I've not commented thus far because when it comes to American politics, well, I'm left-wing and have CRAZY thoughts like "Hey! Universal healthcare and a university system not funded for rich kids and taxes are good!" let alone my views on the environment. To be honest, I think whatever buggars get voted into American politics are too obsessed with big business, with trying to cut taxes, with personal popularity, with completely misusing the term 'liberal'. The odd one or two stands out and don't seem to be utter twats - Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama - but generally I think I've managed to get a little jaded with the entire system.
(Don't flame me. Please don't. I speak with the voice of someone who disagrees with the American political system and much of the Constitution. Bills of Rights, great idea, really I think it is! Just, you know, it's also a deeply-flawed document in many places and oh god I'm going to made to regret posting this aren't I.)
But, you know, I'm slightly optimistic about this because hell, Anyone But The Republicans at this point. I like the idea of a bit of plurality in politics, and having some new voices in Congress might be a good thing. Although the House of Representatives is a bit of a piss-take - election cycles every two years means no real plans can be made and how's that for a slice of Keep Down The Poor People's House? - I do feel that things like electing a woman as Speaker, as having a Muslim in the House, can't be a bad thing. I'll keep my fingers crossed, I think.
But remember: gay marriage has been elected as a Bad Thing across many states, and the fact that a paper banning abortion even made it onto the election sheet is not a good thing. These elections might mean stemming the reactionary tide of nutty right-wing Christians, but from another perspective, these elections just might be another reaction in themselves.
I'll see how the Senate goes, bastion of money and power and nothing for the people that it is.
*quietly sits and hums the Red Flag while hugging a tree*
