I have just booked my summer adventure. Itchy feet got too much for me, and after a good few hours searching Ryan Air's website, managed to get dirt cheap flights.

I am spending sixteen glorious nights in Italy. Why Italy? Edmund Hillary. (... because it's there.) Why sixteen nights? Edmund Hillary ona budget. (... because the flights were cheaper.) I will have to be, at some point, in Milan as that's where we're flying into (CASTELLO SFORZA!) and in Pisa (that's where we're flying out of for less than a Euro... er, it has that tower thingy?) but other than that I AM FREE OF PLANS. Or not, as Rome, Venice and Florence all call to me.

Er, yes. Help please with advice. Youth hostelling it all the way, before you ask (most places around a tenner a night, thank god) and then sorting out some form of rail pass for the travelling.

So. Er. Anyone been and can give me ideas/advice? This is overwhelming but SO EXCITING. Poor Simon doesn't know what he's let himself in for.

... also, there was apparently some TV programme on tonight called Doctor Who? It was a bit good, wasn't it? FOR SOME REASON you're all getting excited about that, no idea why...

It was George Mallory who said he climbed Everest "because its there" actually. Seeing as it killed him, this is not neccesarraly (i can never spell that word, you know what i mean) a good thing.

Sounds amazing, I hope you have a wonderful time. If you're around Sienna is really lovely and great fun if you can watch the Pallio (sp?). It's a big horserace around the main square with the different districts of the city competing. Completely bonkers. Florence is also gorgeous and Rome is great, especially the Vatican, but really hot in the summer. So exciting!

I love David Tennant. Have I said that recently? xxx

Ooh, I might go there. Definitely going to to to Rome, I think... I#m genuinely excited. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT BOOKED ANY HOSTELS YET. Oh, I am a spontaneous madwoman.

I love David Tennant too. Mmm. David Tennant. A good few weeks lie ahead!

Don't worry about booking anything yet, you've got ages of time! If you start to worry about anything though, pop into STA Travel or somewhere and I'm sure they'll be able to give you some decent advice. They'll probably try and sell you something as well, but don't fall for it, or just buy an international student card to placate them :) I'm really excited for you too! Travelling is the best fun in the world ever!

Ooh, dunno if it would be of use at all but there's an international student card - ISIC, or something? - which might get you discounts off things?

And otherwise, yay, Italy! Wow. Have fun. (This comment is quite premature. Yes. But never mind.) Wow.

That is a beautiful icon. *stares*

And oooh, that is a helpful hint about the student card. *goes to check about it*

I LOVE TENNANT. He is so beautiful. Oh.

Ahem, yes. It is beautiful (not that I can take credit for that).

I'm still on the 'wow, Italy' train of thought. Wow. :)

I'm still on the 'wow, Italy' train of thought without any thoughts of PRACTICALITY and the fact that I am somewhat sensitive to gluten so WHAT THE HELL WILL I EAT IN THE COUNTY OF PIZZA AND PASTA AND CIABATTA and then I stop worrying and just think 'wow'.

I'm going to have to buy a camera; when in Rome, do as the tourists do. :-)

Actually you might be okay there. Decent Italian meals often include large chunks of meat and really tasty sauces - they don't consider it their best food, but it's good. Also, they probably don't use American wheat (can't remember if I've explained this one - American wheat was bred to have more gluten in than usual, because it's more filling - this is probably one factor of why we have so many gluten-intolerant people now) so you may be able to eat moer bread than you expect. When my sister visited Europe she found she could actually eat bread! Woo! and she's really really intolerant, so...

Sounds like fun!

Me and my dad have done various bits of europe on the motorbike (although not really italy) and €25-ish will often get a room for two in some little guest house somewhere. We don't book in advance, just see where we end up - most villages have guest houses/b&b's/etc. I think they call them "Pensione". Also, if you just turn up at the tourist info place (ufficio turistico) in any town or city they're really helpful.
