i actually love you, dr k
Dec. 15th, 2007 01:55 pmWhatever happened, yesterday was going to be a good day. I got a FIVE HOUR nap (gratuitous, but needed) and had a successful Primark trip and acquired magic pants that mean that I can now fit in my ball gown without having to continuously shout "I WILL BE THIN" whilst munching on soup and naught else. It was destined to be an awesome day.
BUT OH NO. You see, THE DAY GOT EVEN BETTER because I went to a gig byDr Karl Kennedy Alan Fletcher and the Waiting Room! I even stole one of the promotional posters from work yesterday morning and everything.
(Some context for non-Australians and Brits on my flist, as well as those who are not lazy arts students: Neighbours is a day time soap opera based around the exploits of Ramsey Street, hence the name. It has launched the career of Kylie Minogue, it's run for donkey's years, and is more popular in Britain than in Australia, the actual country it hails from. Two of the longest running characters are Karl and Susan Kennedy, who are sort of my soap parents and it's genuinely upsetting when they get divorced. (It happens every so often.) For more context:

Seriously. Soap parents.)
Katie and I dressed ourselves up and out we went. I was actually a little worried; I was looking forward to this so much that I was mildly afraid that it wouldn't be very good. OH HOW WRONG I WAS.
After a lot of hanging around and attempting to find people and finding people that I didn't mean to but was glad to anyway (all the photos are taken from her; I haven't seen Caroline for ages and it was a good catch up) and generally sort of swayed with faint enthusiasm to the support band.
Here is the thing about our student union. St Andrews is a very small town and as such, the Union has quite an early late license - 2am on Fridays and 1am every other night. Guest Star type people who come along once in a blue moon are apparently not informed about this and therefore tend to turn up rather late. Not this band - they were on by about 10.30pm and the crowd was just perfect at the time.
They played... surprisingly well. Focussed mostly on songs that people knew - I have the most amazing memory of singing along to Champagne Supernova with a whole crowd of people and hey, Dr Karl from Neighbours - as well as little songs about Neighbours, focussing mostly on Karl's true love for Susan. He played the crowd really well, actually, and I was bouncing along and singing like an idiot.
ALSO I TOUCHED HIM. I was quite near the front and it's totally worth the fact that I had to stand by the speakers for two hours and therefore still have a bizarre ringing noise in my left ear.
HERE BE PICTURES.

Katie and I are very excited.

He sings!

He plays tambourine!

And guitar!

Crowd goes wild! (The quote from the header was one of the banners people had brought along.)
I appreciate I am currently writing up a gig about an aging Australian soap star. It may be gloriously, stupidly, studenty thing to do, but it was absolutely marvellous.
Tonight is the Christmas Ball! In between now and then, I have to watch Robin Hood, do a gobbet, get myself ready (it involves a frightening amount of preening) and drink a fairly large amount of wine.
And if you think this is decadent, I got my Christmas hours for the nursing home today, so I'll be spending my Christmas and New Year's on shoft with old people. This is my Christmas and I have every intention to enjoy it to the last drop, even if I'll be enjoying it from only one ear.
