Whilst a poster fell off my door last night, I highly suspect that was because my room is strangely resistant to any kind of white-tack. I was not, unlike the majority of my flist, affected by the earthquake, which is a bit of a shame in a sort of strange way. Oh, the perils of living a squillion miles from pretty much anything but the North sea.

I love the fact that we, as a nation, are horrified by the prospect of one man breaking his pelvis because his chimney fell on him whereas stories of hundreds of people dying in earthquakes in other parts of the world is about the fourth item down the news for all of a day.

On other news, I am probably failing my degree via sitting around the house and a shiny inability to get out of bed. FAIL.

This strikes me as bizarre frequently. Once when I was ranting about a similar situation with the capacity (or lack thereof) for US folks to feel horror at news items concerning other people, someone said it's a color issue. That is, one white person experiences something awful and we go nuts, but a thousand brown people experience something awful and we just shrug and go on about our business. I suspect that it isn't as simple as all that, but the analysis itself was unnerving. I want to live with folks who value life no matter what package it comes in. :/

All that said, though, I'm glad that your pelvis is intact.

It's not always true, I think; some news programs are a bit more logical about things over here, but as a rule, if it doesn't affect the West/Commonwealth then frankly a lot of news agencies don't care. I'll be the first to admit that a story about the changing of, say, our prime minister should be the main story of any day that it happens on. Ad the earthquake should be mentioned, because it affected thousands of people who will be watching the news.

But why oh why do the American caucauses get hours of news coverage but the independence of Kosovo, the situation in Kenya and the elections in Pakistan get barely any coverage?

It's very worrying indeed.

I heard - via the trusted route of a friend of a friend! - that some people in St A did feel the earthquake. We didn't here though so I'm rather doubtful!

I just spoke to my mum and she informs me that we've got some mild structural damage in Liverpool. My main thought, though, was 'why was I so far away?'

And given that the late-night lorries that go down the road wake me up, I highly doubt we had any tremours at all. Probably a good thing!

I'm similarly disappointed at not having been around for the earthquake. I manages to sleep right through the manchester one a few years back, and this time when I would have been in Hull, I'm in Mexico!

See? Sods law! My nan's house was one the same road as the epicentre of the Dudley one a few years back, as well.

I don't want to experience a big one, just a little one!

we felt it, it was unnerving, we got over it. there're facebook groups dedicated to it. it's all over the news. why is it such a big deal, except maybe to scientists and people who actually suffered damage?
meh
