Because I am quite clearly clinically insane, I have agreed to DJ at AltSoc on Friday night in Venue 2. This is primarily because otherwise it would have been in Venue 1 during the AltBop and I actually feel physically sick when I think of having to do that.

I have an... er... eclectic music taste. This is code for 'crap'. Whilst I have some songs that I am playing and genre be damned (Space Pirates mixed with Ghostbusters, anyone?), I have rather intelligently left most of my CDs at home.

This means that I need YOUR HELP. Yes, YOU. Tell me what songs you dance to, what songs make you bop around like a mad person. Prferably make them as obscure as fuck. I'm currently trawling through my Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes downloads for some retro stuff, and I'm not so bad of Ye Modern Indie Music, but I want to hear what other people think.

Oh, but Colleen! I hear you cry. What's in it for me?

Other than my eternal gratitude? Well, I will put up the entire set for download when I'm finished, and if you're in St Andrews and fancy coming to AltSoc between 10-11pm on Friday 25th April (yes, I have a whole hour to fill!) then I'll buy you a drink. Can't say fairer than that, right?

... and now I'm going to go and give a presentation.

Okay, so this probably isn't alt enough or something, but here are some songs that I think are cool to dance to.
Oh, and you should totally get like Whigfield - Saturday night, or the Macerana(sp?) or something, all school disco like. Or something.

Anyway, my ecclectic mix:

The Rasmus - In the Shadows - Haqven't really listened to this in ages, reminds me of college.
Maroon 5 - This Love
Vampire - Antsy Pants
Now You're Gone - Basshunter
Goodbye Mr A - The Hoosiers
The Rock Show - Blink 182
Fly - Blind Guardian
Elvis Ain't Dead - Scouting For Girls
The Beast and the Harlot - Avenged Sevenfold

hmm, I've been on a recent dl-ing spree and I quite like The Courteeners. I think they'd be very good for dancing around like a loon. Maybe.

err, yeah. Can you tell I hve nothing better to do today?

It's worth pointing out that AltSoc is for alternative music; I'll get lynched if I played half of that stuff! However, I HAVE nabbed it for my personl use. :-)

The Courteeners are a bit fab, aren't they?

Yeah, I did think it might not be alternative enough or something stupid like that. But then, you could argue that what you're playing is alternative to what they listen to so it is alternative really =p
I doubt they'd buy it though.

What kindof stuff are you looking for though? Indie/Heavy Metal/Punk/Classic Rock?

Because they all vary widely and Indie isn't really that alternative anymore.

Ooh ooh, you HAVE to play this:
Nena - 99 Luftballoons

Oh and Barbara Ann - Beach Boys.
Though that may be due to that fact that I am currently looking into booking my summer holiday(s)!

OK, here goes! My taste is really eclectic too, so you'll probably hate most of these... ;)

"Call the Ships to Port" Covenant
"Dead Stars" Covenant
"Fortunate Son" Creedence Clearwater Revival
"You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" Dead or Alive

"Peek-a-Boo" is an AWESOME song. It plays every so often on an alt-rock station's weekend show, and I crank it every time. Need to get a copy of that. :-)

If you need me to narrow things down or have any further questions, let me know. I know that I threw a ton of tracks at you there...

Ohhh, I can't wait to see waht your mix looks like. I may download it when you offer, because my "dance party" playlist is very very spare.

Do you need mp3 files, or can you use iPod files, whatever they are? Let me know and I'll convert them, but I recommend:

"Professional Widow" by Tori Amos (the dance remix on her Tales of a Librarian collection - Track 10 here)

"Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" by C+C Music Factory (Track 1 here

This weird-ass remix of "Kung Fu Fighting" that's on a CD Morgan brought back from Belgium in 1998. It's by a band called Bus Stop, and I can't figure out where they're from. The song's on iTunes, but I can't find it anywhere else to link you to a sample. But I'll put it on Sendspace if you want.

I need mp3, I think, because my computer is rubbish and I don't have an iPod myself. But thank you for anything!

From: [identity profile] jennnlee.livejournal.com
No problem. I'll convert them to mp3 and set them up for you tonight/tomorrow morning, if that's not too late. I'm at work now, and am having dinner with my parents tonight.

Sadly, "Gonna Make You Sweat" was purchased from iTunes, so no converting. Boo!

But here's Professional Widow: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ipcpr6

and Kung Fu Fighting: http://www.sendspace.com/file/icq1mg

I really hope the links work. I am approaching middle age and therefore suck at this.

And looking at the rest of this page, it's possible this stuff isn't alt enough for what you need, so I won't be offended if you don't use it. :-)

I don't care if it's not alt, I'm going to have an awesome music collection when all this is over. Thank you so much!

Awesome! I hope you share the finished playlist/mix. I love new music.

*rubs hands*

You do realise what you've done? As soon as I'm back home I'm unleasing my MP3 player at you. It's only 1 gig out of my collection but, y'know, there'll be some stuff in there for you! Give me a tick, I'll make a list :D. *checks for anything danceable*

Okay, right, tell me which of these are too mainstream/unfashionable for you, and I'll just upload the rest :)!

Number #1 crush - Garbage
In The Shadows - The Rasmus
Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
Poison - Alice Cooper
Cinnamon Spider - Jack Off Jill
Chop Suey - System of a Down
Newborn - Muse
Shut Me Up - Mindless Self Indulgence
A Kind Of Magic - Queen
Hang On - [I've no bloody idea who did it but it's on the Daredevil soundtrack]
Love Song - Snake River Conspiracy [BEST VERSION OF THE SONG EVAR]
My Beloved Monster - Eels
Scenotaph - Emanuel [YOU'RE GETTING THIS OR I'LL RIP MY ARMS OFF]
Starlight - Muse
Hysteria - Muse
Points Of Authority - Linkin Park
How Far We've Come - Matchbox 20
Lollirot - Jack Off Jill
If I Were A Weapon - Suzanne Vega

(pity it's 'alternative' rather than 'REALLY F*CKING OBSCURE' because I have some kick-ass classical music remixes and J-Pop)

From: [identity profile] hathy-col.livejournal.com
Jack Off Jill, Alice Cooper and System of a Down are too heavy, Linkin Park and Queen are too mainstream (not a bad thing; just the night is advertised as Alternative and I have rules to stick too) and I already have the Eels, Rasmus and Muse stuff. Other than that, send all away!

*ponders for a tick*

Righty-ho, so that's a zip of:

Number #1 crush - Garbage
Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
Chop Suey - System of a Down
Shut Me Up - Mindless Self Indulgence
Hang On - [I've no bloody idea who did it but it's on the Daredevil soundtrack]
Love Song - Snake River Conspiracy [BEST VERSION OF THE SONG EVAR]
Scenotaph - Emanuel [YOU'RE GETTING THIS OR I'LL RIP MY ARMS OFF]
How Far We've Come - Matchbox 20
If I Were A Weapon - Suzanne Vega

Coming your way later tonight! :D. I think you'll probably rule out a few more yet for being too heavy, but no problemo, at least you'll have a lot of fun new stuff <3!

How the hell is Jack off Jill too heavy? Screw them, "oh, we're alt but we're alt-pansies!"

From: [identity profile] hathy-col.livejournal.com
Jack Off Jill is for RockSoc, which is the Rock Society; it plays the harder stuff, and play the more indie/electro based stuff, which the metalheads at RockSoc would kick off to if subjected to, despite the fact that most of AltSoc also go to RockSoc.

Basically, neither society gets funding if they go too far into each other's department. Scottish charity law. Very boring.

Uhm...well. Gods how does a gothic personality even think of music worth dancin to.

I am in LOVE with anything Pulcifer and tend to merge to German Metal:
- Ramstein
- In Extremo

Also
- Haggard
- Scissor Sisters
- Souxsie and the Banshees

See, I don;t have much DANCE music persay. My type is the banging of the head or thumping the body to it. But if you want to put ANYTHING in this thing, there is one you must NOT avoid

If you forget this one...you're cursed for life by the Music Gods :S:S:S

Er, here be music. I have no idea if these are alt enough or not, but here:

Aeon Spoke - Suicide Boy and Pablo at the Park.
The Eagles - Journey of the Sorcerer - Hitchhiker theme, yay! And with banjo.
Elbow - Leaders of the Free World
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Sufjan Stevens - They are night zombies!! They are neighbours!! They have come back from the dead!!
The Cranberries - Wake Up And Smell The Coffee
Cake - I will survive
Jet - Cold Hard Bitch
Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses
Interpol - Slow Hands
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper
Poe - Hey Pretty

'Finding music for Colleen' turned into 'uploading music I like to make people listen to it', so here is some more at my journal, including some stuff I left off this comment because it's probably too well known, or simply because this is a stupidly long list, oops.

Anyway. Enjoy! Hopefully.

I am no good at dancing therefore I have no dance music. I fail. D: And I am in a total classical music mood lately but I can hardly see people dancing around to stuff like Prelude from Cello Suite No.1 in C :D

But anyway, good luck in searching! (And for the night itself of course :)
