Jul. 29th, 2008 05:41 pmI was not looking forward to today. You see, today was the day in which I would recieve an answer to my sheepish e-mail to my dissertation supervisor, phoned the lady to confess to the crack in my wall and then go and tell what is essentially the truth in mildly different clothing to work. I was banking on being told off, being thrown out and then being fired. Well, the way my summer's going ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
So, dressed in my pajamas with a long and sensible list, I phoned up the landlady this morning. After comfirming a few details, I then proceeded to have the following exchange:
"Oh, and, er, there's a crack in my room? It's quite long?"
"That's fine, we'll sort that when you've moved out."
"Oh. Okay?"
"Right, bye!"
So, that challenge over, I dressed and headed into work.
"Assistant Manager? I need a word. It's a bit urgent."
"Oh, what's wrong?"
"My landlady is throwing me out early! There's a crack in my wall and I'll be out on August 18th..." (These things are, technically, true.)
"Oh, right. Do you have somewhere to go?"
"My mum says I can stay with her, in Liverpool. So, um, sorry?"
"No, that's fine! Don't worry about it. You'll be back in September, yeah?"
I blinked, and got on with my day. Big Manager even offered me her place over the two weeks, as she would be with her mum at the time. I declined, but still.
So, all that hassle over, I more or less skipped home, where I, well, came online. I then go this e-mail from my supervisor:
Your tone of surprise about enjoying research is splendidly touching. It really
is fun, you know. You do well to prompt me - I'd been meaning to get in touch
for the last fortnight. Perhaps in a week or so you could drop me a line with a
bit more sense of what you've actually been reading.
Hope 'Fat Face' is treating you well.
Whilst there is a mild sarcasm which means he can clearly tell that I am quietly not telling him what I've actually done, i.e. not very much, I like that he remembers where I'm working and seems to be vaguely enthusiastic.
So, there's all that done. Now I can go and have my tea and get on with flailing about the crappy weather - STILL FOGGY WHY - and feel as though I have sorted out three of the worries about my summer.
