I'm going to be honest; I wasn't looking forward to this birthday. Being stuck in St Andrews in the summer combined with various other factors meant that basically I was expecting to spend the day with a big bottle of wine and a straw. I wailed about this fairly often and effectively, and lo! it worked.

The day started absolutely ridiculously early, with a combination of my mother texting me, the meat van, and the binmen. As such, I stomped downstairs, ready to open the card Mum had sent me (wthout enough postage, may I add) and got ready to make a cup of tea. Then I turned around to find a pile of presents, balloons, and a general sense of glee.

So, feeling ridiculously emotional, I made my cup of tea and settled down in front of some old-fashioned dayime TV, and opened my presents. A coaster about tea, a mug about cake, a wine glass that contains an entire bottle of wine and Rex from Primeval!

Really, it's like they think I'm obsessed with, you know, tea, wine, cake, and the lizard from Primeval that makes Hannah from S-Club 7 dance around in her underwear. It's like they know me or something!

So, I was pretty cheerful, and ate my breakfast, and watched This Morning (it told me about allotments) and then got a phonecall from [livejournal.com profile] loneraven, informing me she would turn up soon. This is obviously a Thing Of Yay, so when the appropriate time came, I clamboured into my car and went to pick up Iona and Shim, who was coming along as well.

It was a pretty awesome day, I will be the first to admit. The weather stayed relatively stable, and we attempted to avoid the Lammas Market by going for lunch, wherein we dicussed... well, everything, I think. It was all a little bit mad, but these things normally are. Afterwards, in a skillful attempt at gender balancing, or something like that, Iona won Shim a pink elephant, promptly named Hannibal. I also tried to be a vaguely good tour guide, and we went and did a pier walk, and watched the birds diving for fish. It was pretty impressive, I will admit.

Also, no one threw raspberry sorbet at the Scots. I'm not sure if I should be distressed by this or not.

Alas, St Andrews is not at it's best, what with the screaming funfair all around two of the three streets. As such, we headed home, proudly displaying the pink elephant. Well. I say proudly. When I got home, I found Ceri and Katie in the living room, both of whom promptly scarpered. I offered to make drinks, and then discovered THE GREATEST CAKES EVER MADE FOR ANYONE AT ANY TIME.

Yes, that is indeed a Tom Baker cake made by [livejournal.com profile] stupidore (the note reads "Tom Baker. Not a Brownie or a Mexican. Honest") and a very good representation of Dalek Fred by Ceri. I nearly cried, but settled for loads of photos instead.

We then had an instructive afternoon of TV. Iona disapproves heartily of Come Dine With Me, but doesn't object so much to Richard and Judy. It was just... really nice, you know? I was surrounded by people I liked, with awesome cake, and that was pretty much all I wanted in a day. Unfortunately, Iona and Shim had to return to Edinburgh, and as the owner of the car and therefore the transport, it was my job to get them there.

Now, all this in itself should be a pretty good day right there. I felt thorougly spoiled, but oh no! My day was not in fact over! After dropping off Iona and Shim, I sped to pick up Katie from work and got a takeaway from the Balaka, which is the Nicest Curryhouse Ever. Having not had takeaway of this form fora while, I was a delighted person about this, let me tell you. Also, we're swimming in leftovers for a while now. BUT OH NO, this wasn't it, either! After eating, I ran around like a madwoman and got ready for going out.

I thought it was only going to be a small outing, and originally, it was. Ceri was there, and then Kayley from work turned up, with another coaster insinuating I was an alcoholic (is there a theme here?) and a packet of cocktail umbrellas. Yay, said I! As more people turned up, cocktail umbrellas were put everywhere. In the end, it was a good mix of people; all willing to talk, even though I knew them all from totally random places. More importantly, I also didn't get too drunk, despite a flurry of shots ("it's only your birthday for another hour and you're not drunk!") and a lot of cocktails. Kate from work also brought me a hat to wear, which had apparently been discussed whilst her and Kayley did the delivery on Saturday. I'm not sure if I'm flattered or alarmed by this...

(yes! I wanted to see a pint with a cocktail umrella!)

I strangely like that last photo, even though I do look like an absolute maniac.

And after all that, I went home, finished off a glass of wine, drank some water, and went to bed. My week-long run of insomnia appears to be over (well, okay, the alcohol probably helped) as I slept like a log, and then I woke up to find a birthday card from [livejournal.com profile] tau_sigma! Yay! Thank you!

So that was my birthday. Thanks for all the messages and stuff, and just... yes. I have had a pretty rubbish summer thus far, but yesterday was absolutely bloody fab. I am a happy Colleen who has awesome friends. (And now an awesome hat, too.)

Tom Baker cake! And dalek! And cocktail umbrellas! Awesome. :) I'm glad you had such a good birthday.

(Also, you are most welcome. Clearly it was supposed to arrive on your birthday, but, um, the weekend got in the way and somehow I didn't post it until Monday. Sorry.)

Yay elephants! Almost wish I'd won one for myself, did I not have a chirruping lizard of my own, of course...
