Dec. 20th, 2008 05:50 pmOkay, I am now the only person in this entire building, which is a bloody strange sensation let me tell you. At least when I was the only person in the library there were librarians and so forth around, looking at me in a puzzled sort of way.
I cannot be arsed with my dissertation today. I've only got one more chapter and my conclusion to do - hurrah, hurrah! - and you would think it would be an exciting chapter. It's entitled 'spies' and is all about intelligence networks, and insurrections, and agent provocateurs. It would make a jolly interesting TV program. In fact, it did, it was called 'The Devil's Whore' and I had great fun watching the episode about my bit of history and intermittently howling "O HAI SECRETARY THURLOE YOU ARE UNDERUSED IN FICTION ABOUT THIS PERIOD." Which is true. And there are bucketloads of sources for this bit - seven volumes of Thurloe's state papers before we even look at anything else - but it's bloody BORING. It involves trawling through billions of pages and it's just not all that good, really. Honestly. And no research has really been done on it since the 1960s, and I'm assuming I can't just paraphrase the book over a few thousand words, so I have to do the trawling myself.
Ah well. Strictly's on soon and then it is TWILIGHT TIME, oh yes.
