So, I was going to come on here and bitch about my car possibly giving up the ghost again. Which is awful and annoying and argh. Etc.

Instead, I just got a phone call from my mum. As a result, I am now frantically googling - on her request - breast cancer, lumps in the breast, and the exact proceedure that they do to you when you go in for the fast-tracked. She is taking this rather badly, although at least she went to the doctors immediately. She was joking about it and saying she'd rather die on cancer than have a mammogram. I think she was joking. She's really iffy about her appearence at times; I imagine Dad would eventually persuade her into having stuff done if it was needed. We don't have any breast cancer whatsoever in the family (it's the heart attacks we have to look out for) and she's only 45 and I'm fairly sure she's not too far into the menopause, if she's there at all, but she is a smoker and does drink, which increases chances.

I am very, very aware that 90% of all lumps on the breasts turn out to be benign. This is Good Odds, officially.

There's not really much to say, beyond that. I just felt it was worth recording and would take any bits and bobs of medical advice from those who can give it.

I am still shit-scared.

Medical advice: deep breaths. Your mum's done exactly the right thing in going to the doctor immediately, and cracking jokes, all the better. I'll be thinking of you, my dear.

Oh, love. *hugs* Good Odds, yes, but I know it's still terrifying. However, cracking jokes + early checking + positive thinking = always good. I'll be thinking of you.

*hugs* this sounds awful. It's not happened to me, but we have a history of breast cancer in my family and so we're all very careful. My sister found a lump when she was 16/17 and took it straight to the doctors who sent her for a mammogram and a biopsy. I was at uni, but from what I can tell, the painful procedure was worth it for knowing that there was nothing wrong.

Bestest of wishes to you and your mum xxx

Oh dear. Well, best of luck with it. I hope everything turns out OK. She's off to a good start by getting it looked at, for sure.

Research makes everything better. (At age 21, I've finally cracked and officially turned into Hermione Granger!) Thanks. *hugs*

Early checking is much good; my mum hads a tendency to ignore these things, so it's wonderful she's got it sorted it time. I am much calmer now due to the healing powers of research. *hugs*

Thank you for giving me a heads up on what happens at the actual check; she didn't get much advice from the doctors, or if she did I think she went a bit blank and didn't take it all in, and the NHS website is Not Helpful. Thanks for the best wishes, I'm sure it'll all work out. *hugs back*

Definitely a plus on getting the early check; mum is notorious for not checking out stuff like this, so that's one weight off everyone's mind, mostly hers, I think!

*hugs* It sounds like she's doing everything right - the best thing you can possibly do is get checked out ASAP. I'll be sending good vibes her way.

My mum had uterine cancer which led to a hysterectomy a couple of years back, and is doing absolutely fine these days. Let me know if I can provide a friendly ear.

Vibes are much appreciated, not much can be done until the biopsy but luckily that's happening soon. Thanks for the comment.
