set phasers to over-excited fangirl!

So, Friday night was my last ever AltSoc, and I got to DJ for the last time. It was an open bar - well, you paid a fiver to get in and the Union felt guilty for not giving us a bar so we got to use OffSales, long story - so it was really rather crowded, which made my set ever so much more fun. And terrifying. It's all good. The sight of about thirty people bouncing around to Alphabeat made my heart glow, let me tell you. I finished with the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs track - Zero - and even though no one but me and Brigitte danced, I think we made up for the lack of other people with sheer enthusiasm.
The nezt day was vaguely horrific. Even though I made a nobel decision not to drink any more than three drinks, I still had to go to work for 10am, which was basically made of fail. I don't mind my job, honestly, but it helps when there's people on that I don't want to smack around the head...
Anyway, I ignored my exhaustion in the evening because I went to see the new Star Trek film. You know, that little indie flick. I was initially freakishly over-excited about this film on the basis that I am, deep down, a bit of a die-hard Trekkie and OH MY GOD HAVE YOU SEEN THE CASTING AHAHAHAHA I AM EXCITED. Then a little part of me heard the odd rumour and spoiler, and found myself thinking "oh dear, does this go against canon?" There's also my rather well-established fear that Chris Pine wouldn't! talk! like! Shatner!
I mean, seriously, people. There wee some bits that made me wince a little - wouldn't The Beastie Boys be a little outdated three centuries in the future? - but it also hooked me from the moment that the woman got pulled out of a noisy, screaming corridor into the vast silence of space. That was it, I was completely hooked.
It was just... eeeheee wonderful. I can't even talk about it sensibly, I need to go and see it again. I was okay with the Romulans (did they not include Klingons due to the fact that it's veering alarmingly close to That Time The Klingons Looked Rubbish?) being there because I've never had too much truck with them, and the Spock and Uhura thing, and it was all just quite a sensible way to do a reboot, whilst including the basic centres of the characters. I mean, I squeed at all of them like the fangirl that I am, and so did the audience who didn't know Trek. So I think that's what counts.
Sod the fact I'm broke, I'm going to see it again if it kills me. Despite the fact that I have to flail and worry about revision now, as my exams are rather soon. Ah well.

Date: 2009-05-10 06:30 pm (UTC)Yes, it's about young Kirk...but here it opens new questions about what spins they took with the movie. Like...how would it have all worked and how would they have all interacted, if things had gone as they should. For those who have seen it, this should make sense.

Date: 2009-05-15 09:21 am (UTC)I am insisting that my Dad comes to see it with me next - he is excited. And then i'm going to go and watch it on IMAX. I have to say, i thought Karl Urban put on the show of his life and the casting was, overall, fucking amazing.
(I was disturbed to find Spock strangley sexy too...)
