i cry when angels deserve to die
Apr. 25th, 2010 02:17 pmSo, Doctor Who scared the crap out of me. I like River, and the angels scare me but in the best possible way, so I was looking forward to this week. I wasn't disappointed, either.
Firstly: I really like the church element to the whole thing, actually. The Bishop was fabulous. "No offence." "Plenty taken, if that's all right with you." Although - and it's probably just me who liked this element of it - the name often used for the Catholic church in medieval times at least was 'the Church militant' so even if that wasn't deliberate, it felt right, in a way.
And poor old Sacred Bob. I thought it was a really effective use of the technique, and it felt awful, and it really worked to hear the voices of the angels. Plus I think we needed to, really - I still can't work out their motive for just killing people - and I suspect it will be more useful next week.
And yes, the angels scared the pants off me. Not only do we have to be afraid that any and all statues mighr move and kill us, we also need to contemplate that a speck in our eye might destroy us and that they're going to come out of the telly and kill us all. Thanks, Steven Moffat, I needed that.
The sets were good. One of the things I loved the most about The Satan Pit was the sense of enormity, and age, and ancient civilisations, and I felt the same about the maze of the dead here.
And River is fabulous, and I don't care who knows it. As is Amy and the Doctor. And I hate cliffhangers, particularly hideously unexpected ones.
I am so tired I think I might fall over if I stand up.

Date: 2010-04-25 01:29 pm (UTC)The scale of the maze was awesome.
And I only realized just now: Steven Moffat has started killing people. So far he somehow rescued them all in one way or another. Now THAT is truly scary!

Date: 2010-04-25 02:05 pm (UTC)And I have to admit, I watched the whole thing clutching onto a pillow, occasionally texting people to howl 'DO NOT WANT', especially during the section with Amy and the angel. AAARRRRGGHHH.
