Jan. 11th, 2011 09:19 pmGallstones, infected gallbladder, possibly surgery needed but no one quite sure. Mum is convinced she's going home tomorrow, with the pinprick pupils of someone who is on an awful lot of morphine to stop the pain. I suspect she may not, in fact, be going home tomorrow. I am aware that gallstones are pretty common, and your gallbladder is something you can cheerfully live without, but it's all still very unsettling.
Ugh, this is rubbish.

Date: 2011-01-11 09:33 pm (UTC)What I would expect them to do is give her antibiotics to settle the infection and painkillers obviously, and then wait a few weeks (probably around 6 weeks) for everything to settle down before doing the operation to remove the gallbladder. They probably won't operate right away because the infection makes everything inflamed and makes the operation more difficult, as well as increasing the chance of complications The op is really quick and the consultants do loads of them.
This is just my opinion as a medical student so I'm not an expert and they policy in southport might be different! However it is something that happens to a lot of people and once the gallbladders out almost everyone doesn't have any further problems!
If you have any specific questions let me know.
