So today I had a smear test. And yes, before anyone tells me otherwise I am thoroughly and overwhelmingly grateful that I can have this very important test for free on the NHS, and I am lucky to live in a society that thinks such things are important and a time when such tests are possible. I KNOW THESE THINGS which makes me feel more of a total shit for dreading it, and spending all day nervous, and babbling at the nurse.
But, well, it was just A Day. I got all the way to Victoria and found out the station was shut, which meant I had to go all the way in the opposite direction to Barking; the woman on the connecting Overground train sat opposite me eating fried chicken and chips; I got off at my normal train shop and ran most of the way to the GP, meaning I didn't get to have the mini-shower I wanted to have before I let anyone near me. AND THEN they didn't have the size of speculum I need ("we have small-to-medium, it's very similar?" and I just wanted the damn thing over and it turns out IT IS NOT VERY SIMILAR). THEN when I got out of the surgery the storm broke and I walked home in a pouring, golfball size rain.
And yes, all of these things are better than getting cervical cancer but it doesn't take away the fact I am damp and slightly pained right now.
SO! Now that youve read through all that, now we're going to talk about EXCITING FANDOM THINGS. I want opinsions and to crowd-source some bits and bobs about films I have watched recently where the best characters say distressingly little. LET'S DO IT.
I have signed up a Navigation Officer Darwin promptfest, and I think I know where I'm going with it - I want to examine one of her few actual lines of dialogue. Unfortunately, I have very little to work off otherwise!
Fandom seems to be of the opinion that her first name is Aisha, and I can take that. It's a pretty name and there's no reason why not. However! Why do you think she's a little older than the rest of the cast? Late enrollee to Starfleet? Very real need to emphasise that there are older people, and not everyone will fly through the ranks? I mean, that's just how organisations work, right? How awesome is she really, on a scale of 1-10? (Answer: 43.) Why did she pick navigation and the command track? Does she just do opposite shifts to Chekov? What's her feelings on coming secomd to someone so obviously younger?
TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS ON HER BACKSTORY.
(For reference: I think it's rather nice to see a representative of people who keep their head down and do their job really fucking well but for whatever reason occasionally get passed over by the flashy wunderkids. I'm not identifying, at all, ahem. But in seriousness, I think that's how any large military organisations have to work, simply for the numbers. And I think her feelings on a ship full of wunkerkids, that she joined after Nero, are complex at best.)
I didn't talk about this at the time, but I saw Pacific Rim a couple of weeks ago and I lived it. The more I think on it, the more I love it and want to fling myself head first into fandom. This is mostly because whilst the featured characters are interesting, all I want to to talk about are the minor characters and Jaegar teams. Seriously, up until this weekend I thought that the Kaidonovskys were siblings, not married. There should have been WAY more time on Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon.
THAT SAID I did like Mako when she was busy being competent. And was definitely emotionally attached to all the characters by the end. Except possibly Newt and Herman? I mean, okay, they were interesting, but I don't know, a bit too much of a stereotype.
Basically, though, the Russian team were totally the best of all of them, and I'm basing this entirely on a slash of red lipstick and a look that says Sasha would destroy you but you're not worth her time.
I have spent the last couple of days browsing through what fic I can find, as well as the Wiki and whatever information I can glean. I want to know more not about their life afterwards, but the Kaiju war. The best part of the film was the very unique Jaegar teams. How does the Drift actually WORK? I mean really, in principle? What nations gave support? How did it change geopolitical ties? If it's only Pacific nations affected, why is Stacker British? (Other than the fact that Idris Elba could probably justpunch a Kaiju in the face.) Why are people still living on the coast and fishing etc? We see that there are ration cards in place in America at least bur Hong ong is thriving. What's happening there?
Which is why I think that while the Pacific Rim fandom grows I will keep reading. I'm hoping that people there are writing long plotty fics of wonder about the early lives of Wei triplets, and what on earth Tendo was up to when he wasn't in the control room for giant robots and oh I just want everything.
And if you've read through all that you might have forgotten about all the gory details of my smear test. Mwahahaha.

Date: 2013-07-29 09:06 pm (UTC)I could also be happy with a Darwin who came in late because she'd been doing something else first - either Other Awesome Paid Work or Family Duties - and has then, in fact, whizzed through the command track, making her older but on a par with the others in some ways. Perhaps this previous thing pointed her to the navigation/command stuff (err... she was a safari guide with a knack for tracking the big animals and keeping the tourists in line when she found them, or a kickass nurse who told doctors what to do, or a freelance pilot who briefly worked for pirates before Starfleet - Pike? - picked her up and let her off jail time in exchange for a ten-year military contract).
My head-canon on people's reactions to Chekov is that they are more likely to want to look after him than to be jealous, it's more 'look what our baby can do' than 'how come he can do that?'. Darwin might be upset that she isn't on first shift, or glad to be on second where she doesn't have to deal with so-and-so, or resigned to not getting first and pleased not to have been dumped in third. Knowing that she joined after the crew's formative moment, she probably knows that she will need time to gel with the others, and is torn between gladness and sorrow that she didn't get to/have to deal with Nero. TLDR: yes, it's totally complex.

Date: 2013-07-30 08:27 pm (UTC)Omg I love Aisha Darwin. I do love that fandom just gave her a first name - it's the actress's name, I think? - and yes, it's very pretty! Though I think I'm totally mispronouncing it in my head. But yes, she is beautiful in a thoroughly unconventional and refreshing way, and she just Does Shit and Makes Things Work and Omg.
I shall add Pacific Rim to my long list of Films I Want To See When They're Out For Rental (Because I'm Old And The Cinema Is TOO LOUD and TOO EXPENSIVE) (TM).

Date: 2013-08-18 01:27 pm (UTC)"The music got louder and one of the Chinese triplets shouted at the Kaidanovskys.
'Your music is horrible!'
'Horrible!' another echoed.
'Don't disrespect the dome!' added the third.
'If you have problem with Ukranian hard house, you have problem with life,' Sasha said. 'If you have problem with life... maybe we can fix that.' "
I have some serious elaborate feels/headcannons about the Kaidanovskys.
