This weekend Iona got married and lo, it was beautiful and magnificent and I cried quite a bit. In the best possible way.
It was, all in all, a truly splendid weekend and all concerned with organising deserve a definite high-five. Richie and I headed up a reasonably civilised time to Edinburgh, and trundled across Edinburgh (read: climbed ridiculous hills, vaguey thought I was having a heart attack) to our highly sophisticated Travelodge. We were there with enough time to get changed and get over to central Edinburgh, where we met a very stressed Shim and Iona. Shim's parents were very kindly putting on a party for everyone to get to know each other the night before, and even more kindly they had sorted out a us for us to get there. We had a tour of Edinburgh on the way there, and when we got there we found an Anwar and a Tali and proceeded to get gently drunk (people kept topping up my glass!) eat marvellous food and get to know some new people, or at least get to know some of the Sari Crew better.
On the bus on the way home, Iona's family were singing traditiona Hindi wedding songs. After they finished, we felt the best thig to do was give a cheery rendition of 500 Miles. Not quite the same thing, mind you.
We went to a whiskey bar after this with one or two others, and had a good gossip about fanfiction, Lord of the Rings fandom circa 2004 and general good fun, cackling wildly about Star Trek. EVEN BETTER on the way home we went to a chippy. Do you know how hard it is to find a decent chippy in Walthamstow? VERY BLOODY HARD. So yummy.
Woke up the next morning and lazed around for a bit, waiting for Shim to come and pass over the Super Secret Surprise Flowers for his and Iona's relatives. After he arrived, Richie and I went to find a delicious fried breakfast - and succeeded - before coming bak to the hotel room and getting changed.
After this, we headed to the venue itself which was in the vaults under the South Bridge, so despite heading up stairs we were technically inbasements - a weird sensation. It was a beautiful venue, and we made some awkward small talk before being chuffled upstairs by the arrival of Iona.
After some important pre-preparation type stuff with the registrar, the ceremony began and I spent a little bit too much time crying, frankly! I wept when Iona walked in simply because she looked so magnificent, I managed to not cry when I did my reading, which I was quietly proud of. They asked me to do The Day The Saucers Came by Neil Gaiman, which is longer than I realised when I started practicing it. Equally, though, I got to fulfill a life ambition of doing a zombie impression in formal wear. Win! I was quite pleased that people laughed and made 'aw' noises at the appropriate partys, which is what I wanted, and people were kind enough to complement me afterwards. That said, another of their friends did a beautiful poem too and it was all just... lovely.
But yes, the cremony was beautiful, with candles and a wonderful registrar and generally just wonderful despite my weeping. GOOD WEEPING HONEST.
The reception was really lovely, and the meal was fabulous. I enjoyed chatting with the people on my table, the food was magnificent, and the speeches were really touching, particularly the unexpected "I'm not actually a best man?" speech by Shim's brother. Richie managed to liberate the flowers from our room with time to spare, too, especially when Iona forgot to actually give them out!
The rest of the night was taken up by ceilidh and chatting. Alas, I fell over in my heels which was super embarrassing. To be fair I can fall over in flat shoes on a flat floor whilst stone cold sober so it was fairly inevitable, and the ankle pain is receeding a little now...
But yes, it was wonderful. It's the first wedding of a friend I've been to, and I can't believe how long I've known Iona and that she is now MARRIED OMG. Bride and groom looked so happy and comfy together, and it was just very them. Magnificent. Plus they still have another wedding to go in India in December! Yay!
The rest of the weekend was full up with a hangover that came and went onSunday, in between me seeing Andrew and Ali and then Katie and family before heading off back home. I really do wish I had the Monday off work, but never mind - I shall just power through this weekn and endeavour not to fall over again...
