This year's MK Collectormania - the sixth in a row for me! - was a change of pace. I went straight from work, and due to no longer having a car I had to take the train. This meant I had my own weight in baggage. We also went out for lunch with a recruitment agency on Friday, so by the time I left work I was also slightly tipsy. GOOD TIMES.
As it was hotter than hell in London, and there were problems on the line, I spent too long waiting in Euston for a train. Fortunately, the trains to Milton Keynes from London are both frequent and very fast, so I was there in very little time and trundled over to the Travelodge, where I found Lucy and four beds. FOUR. Ironically, there were only three of us. It felt like some kind of weird karmic retribution for all the times we slept on the floor...
Lucy and I spent the evening chatting, swapping fic recommendations and youtube videos, and Ann turned up much later on due to chaos on her trains getting down. We continued to stay up late and chat. It was just... lovely. I don't see these ladies often enough!
I woke up at 6.30am on Saturday and staggered blindly into the bathroom. Ann and Lucy slept peacefully on as I showered, dressed, and created myself a nest of make up by the big mirror. You see, on Saturday I had decided it was an excellent idea to spend a day dressed up as Gamora. My trials had gone tolerably well, but I knew I needed to apply many, many layers and be patient while they dried. It was, in short, a rather long morning, although I had at least finished making my face green and done the contouring by the time everyone else woke up!
While Ann and Lucy got dressed, I finished off yet more make up including putting green gel eyeshadow on my lips and then hoiked myself into a corset and boots. Dutifully dressed, with Ann as Donna Noble, we headed out into the interminable drizzle that summed up Saturday's weather. Bleurgh! Lucy had brought a car with her, fortunately, which made life perfect, although it had a very weird way of turning the engine over. We got there in the end, fortunately...
We didn't have to queue for too long, mildly horrified though we were at the early bird ticket prices they now have. After trekking over to the Asda for lunch supplies - I hid in the plant display, unable to eat throughout the day because green - we did a couple of guests. First was Nick Blood, who plays Hunter is Agents of SHIELD. He was bemused at how green I was, although his assistant took pictures of me. We also met the lovely SamuelAnderson, who plays Danny Pink, and he was LOVELY. Serenaded me with song, asked about the make up ("you got up at 6.30am? I only just went to bed then"), took a picture with me, generally was a charming human being. Also had an excellent hat.
We spent a lot of the day taking pictures with other cosplayers - Ann was wonderful at photobombing various Doctors and Captain Jacks - and Ann also continued her quest to get a Game of Thrones poster filled with as many signatures as possible. It's getting very full!
We stopped for lunch, where I gently drank a cup of tea through a straw and had pictures taken by random people. LOOK, THE GREEN WAS EPIC, even if I did have to take my glasses off a lot. Curse my poor eyesight. It was a struggle to find any Marvel cosplayers, which was a bit strange. Also lots of people mistook me for the Hulk, which was obviously strongly inaccurate.
Due to a Pro Plus haze (next time I dress myself up in green, I decided, I need to bring easily eaten snacks) I managed to sign myself up for the cosplay competition, which was... a less good idea. Ann and I both entered, and it was lengthier than I realised. I felt very bad for leaving Lucy in the audience! It was good fun but in retrospect I would have maybe preferred watching it. Never mind. There was a very cute Odinson family, with tiny Loki and Thor. They were probably my favourite.
After the cosplay, we decided it was time to head back to the Travelodge. Ann and Lucy had well-deserved cups of tea and I took off all of my make up over a period of several minutes and also a long shower. We then trundled out for our traditional Wetherspoons, which was delicious until my blood sugar went bonkers and I had to go back to the Travelodge. Ah well, an important lesson has been learned, I feel!
We had a much quieter Saturday. We had a long lie-in and went over to the convention after the bit where you have to pay to enter, and grabbed some virtual tickets before the important business of the traditional Sunday Morning Fry Up. Om nom nom. The fact we did this dressed in Starfleet uniform is neither here nor there. On the way we also had a slight row with a passing man.
"Dad!" said the child with the man. "Look, it's Wolverine!"
"No," he corrected them, "it's someone dressed as Wolverine."
"No, it actually IS Wolverine!" shouted over Lucy.
"Yep!" I added. "And we're really Starfleet officers!"
We met William Sadler, who has been in many things but most importantly was Death in Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure. He insisted on getting a picture of us, which was awesome! We also met Christine Adams - Agent Weaver from Agents of SHIELD - and spent a lot of the afternoon just taking pictures of the passing cosplayers and generally had a relaxing afternoon, with a lot less people.
We left in the afternoon, and Lucy kindly dropped me off at the station as I hastily changed dresses in the backseat of her car. Classy, as always, that's me.
I got back in good time and had a lazy Sunday afternoon. Now it's Monday, which I have taken off work because I am sensible, even though I ended up awake at 8am because apparently twelve children screaming their way through a trampoline is how the people in the house behind us like to spend a morning. I'm finishing typing this up, have updated facebook with pictures of the weekend, and now I'm watching Firefly because, frankly, I can. Having also eaten lunch I'm going to wash up, sort out the laundry and then organise my autographs as they have now outgrown the folders I have! Then I might just read the Ms Marvel and Hawkeye books I picked up BECAUSE I CAN.

That's you told, passing man! I hope you won't try to destroy the magic and wonder of childhood again.
Collectormania sounds like excellent fun!
